I’M MICHELLE .. here’s a little about me.

My professional career and foray into business analysis started in Telecommunications as a Process Specialist. I quickly realized I had a love and passion for making things better, creating efficiencies, establishing standards and promoting consistency across and within functional groups.

Being a Business Analyst for over 15 years and certified business analyst professional (CBAP) since April 2008, I’ve realized that formal training is great and we must continue to hone our skills and knowledge with courses but we cannot abandon those other aspects of the vocation that are rooted in relationships. Exploring and utilizing people skills that allow us to win others over are just as important as technical skills. Working on things skills such as negotiation, communication, patience, creativity and staying curious can only make us more rounded and better practitioners.

Techniques, tips + tricks

As business analyst practitioners and trusted advisors, we need to be great communicators who:

  • simplify complex ideas for easy consumption 
  • negotiate requirements and their priority
  • build and foster relationships, and
  • continue to be curious.

These suggestions do not negate the importance of technical skills but are reminders that we shouldn’t lose sight of other non-technical tools that are just as essential to our growth and profession.
